Abilene Writers Guild Meeting Minutes

April 26, 2001, 7:30 p.m., Center for Contemporary Arts

President Stewart Caffey called the meeting to order. The minutes are now posted on the AWG web site, so reading them is waived, and the minutes are accepted by acclamation. Members may examine a hard copy of the minutes, which was circulated at the meeting.

Many guests were introduced and "Brags and Sags" were reported by the membership. The details of reported successes and challenges will be included in your next Big Country Writers.

Dale Ogren reported she attended Robyn Weaver's workshop this past weekend and that it was excellent.

Treasurer Gail McMillan reported the operating fund balance to be $2128.46 as of today, but she advised this total was unofficial, since the bank statement for this month has not been received.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Stewart thanked those providing refreshments: Mary Craig, Ginny Greene, JoAnn Horn and Augustine Tennant. He also announced the sale of the AWG building for $16,000. The realtor, Jim Salisbury, worked hard to effect this sale.

Gladys Hume has improved enough to move back to her home.

Stewart encouraged everyone to sign up for the June 2nd Writers Workshop at a very low price of $25 for both the workshop and the meal. Those wishing to attend the workshop only will pay $20.

Nancy Robinson reiterated the excellent opportunity we are being offered with the superb line-up of speakers for this workshop, adding that we would pay a great deal more to hear these same speakers at similar seminars in metropolitan areas.

OLD BUSINESS:

Jan Carrington reported 212 entries have been received for the contest.

NEW BUSINESS:

Stewart asked the membership to consider who would represent AWG as our honoree at the Annual Art Award Celebration, hosted by the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council. Nancy Robinson moved that we elect Gail McMillan as our honoree. Carolyn Dycus seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

Stewart introduced Ruth Sellers, Chairwoman of the nominating committee who announced the nominees for next month's election: Vice-president Nancy Masters, Treasurer Gail McMillan, Mac Davis, Board member, Barbara Darnall, Board member and Elaine Coleman, Alternate Board member. These nominees, if elected, will serve from June 1, 2001, to May 31, 2003.

Gail McMillan introduced our speaker, Paula Thomas, who has published a romance book and a western book. She presented writing from the perspective of those in the reading world who have handicaps and disabilities, and how to most effectively write using characters with disabilities.

The meeting adjourned for refreshments.

Respectfully submitted,

Carolyn Dycus
