President Stewart Caffey called the meeting to order and introduced guests. The minutes are now posted on the AWG website, so reading them is waived. Motion was made by Nancy Robinson that they be approved as printed. That motion was seconded by Barbara Darnall and passed.

Treasurer Gail McMillan gave the financial report. Expenses totaled $1244.15 and income was $1595.00. The present operating account balance is $2733.84.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Four members announced receiving or completing assignments for iam3rd.com. Both Jan Carrington and Donna Chapman entered the Johnson County Writing Contest and came out with four awards each. Three of those were first place prizes! AWG won the lion's share of awards in that particular contest. Jan's children's story and poem won first place awards. Donna won first place for a children's picture book. Donna also announced a consulting job at the public library in Sonora. Other "brags" were announced by Sandra Millholland, Ginny Greene, Stewart Caffey and Barbara Rollins who entered a 24-hour contest. No winning entry but received a $50 door prize!

Nancy announced this month's contest winners: 1st place - a tie between Sue Turner with The Oak Leaf, and Ruth Sellers with "Penmanship: Education for a Lifetime." 2nd place was awarded to Shirley Strawn for her piece about "Morton Valley." Next month's subject for the members' contest is "Humor."

Barbara Rollins announced Friends of the Library would be honoring authors of books published this past year, and to notify her if any had works published that were not already included in that group. Also, she announced a workshop, "Of Monkeys and Dragons," featuring holistic health issues. Finally, she gave notice that all who did not renew their AWG memberships this year would shortly disappear off the web page.

Shirley Strawn announced the Center for Illustrated Children's Literature would be opening September 14, 2000. Nancy mentioned that this organization had invited us to meet in their facility if it met our needs. Meeting places for AWG are still under investigation and consideration.

Stewart read an article written by Charlsie Poe, published in 1991 on the first page of the Abilene Reporter-News, a historical piece about General Sam Houston tied to several Winters' residents.

OLD BUSINESS:

Stewart reported that keys to the AWG building will be available for each board member. All who enter the building will sign in on the notebook provided by the door. Stewart also announced that all members who do not sign up for this current year will no longer a monthly newsletter.

After a short discussion, Barbara Rollins moved that AWG meet at the CCA for our September meeting. Our dues are paid for a year, so all future meetings this year are free of charge. Barbara Darnall seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

Gail announced that we now have 80 members signed up as of today.

PROGRAM:

Nancy introduced the program, a members' program, reading various members' works and critiquing them. Eight separate pieces were presented and a lively discussion followed.

Refreshments were served by Jim and Donna Chapman, Ginny Greene and Debra Evans.

Meeting adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Carolyn Dycus, 8-25-00
