Abilene Writers Guild Meeting Minutes

August 22, 2002
The meeting was called to order by Stewart Caffey who took President Rollins’ place due to a European Trip. Stewart asked for visitors and new members to stand and introduce themselves. There were several.
The Minutes were called for and they are on the webpage no one asked for any changes to be made. The Treasurer’s Report was given by Gail McMillian, we have a balance of $2,033.50 as of meeting time with 72 members paid up.
Stewart asked for Brags and Sags.

Jo Cox signed a contract with the Grace Museum to write for them.

Ginnie Green bragged that she got the newsletter out on time for August.

Barbara Darnall is working with the children who are to speak at the 9-11 ceremony in Abilene.

Nancy Masters and Ruth Sellers got their advance money from a project they are working on and the book is a go.

Laura Thaxton is starting on her 6th year for her newsletter.
There were no Sags.
Announcements
Stewart announced that Vernon Williams who teaches at ACU has received an award for his work with the 12th Armory Division in Abilene.
Ginnie Green announced that Robyn Conely O’Brien will be giving free critiques at the Abilene Book Festival.
Nancy Masters will be giving a program at the Book Festival on children’s Writing.
Stewart turned the meeting over to Nancy Masters and she talked about dues being payable now to continue getting the newsletter. If you want to be on a critique group, you must get your name to Barbara Rollins and she will set you up with a group.
Another thing we are trying is reading at the end of each business meeting, Anyone who wants to read their work is invited to put their name in a hat and you will be given 5 minutes and no more to read your work to the membership present.
Nancy Masters announced the winners of the Members Only Monthly contest. There were thirteen entries. The subject matter was Music. $20 for first prize was given to Doug Sellers. The judge was the Professor of Music and Vocal Performance at ACU. Critiques were not back and will be mailed later.
There was a reminder that the Workshop with Katherine Lay will be on October 19, 2002 at the Firs Baptist Church facility where we have out Thanksgiving supper, at 2nd and Hickory. It will begin at 9:00 in the morning until 12:00. It will be $15.00 for members and $20.00 for non-members. We need at least 25 people to make this a break even deal.
Doris Tull was the only member prepared to read their work and she read a poem.
Nancy Masters introduced the speaker for the evening, Ken Casper, "Love on a Hot Afternoon, Writing Dialog that Sizzles." Ken sold his 1st book 2 ½ years ago. He is on his way to having his 10th book published.
After a rousingly informative program, the meeting was adjourned and refreshments were served.
