Abilene Writers Guild Meeting Minutes

February 22, 2001, 7:30 p.m., Center for Contemporary Arts

President Stewart Caffey called the meeting to order. The minutes are now posted on the AWG web site, so reading them is waived, and the minutes are accepted by acclamation. Members may examine a hard copy of the minutes, which is provided at each regular meeting. Guests were introduced and "Brags and Sags" were reported by the membership.

Treasurer Gail McMillan reported operating fund beginning balance to be $1685 and the ending balance this month to be $1,729.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Gail McMillan reported AWG now has 98 members.

Augustine Tennant is very ill with flu symptoms. Members can send get-well wishes to her home.

Nancy welcomed member Joan Rodgers back after two months of illness and surgery. Joan happily reported successful surgery and complete recovery.

OLD BUSINESS:

The only old business regarded the AWG building for sale. One person had expressed an interest in buying the building. The realtor will keep us posted.

NEW BUSINESS:

Jan Carrington announced that the Annual Spring Contest, open to the public, begins March 1 and ends March 31. She brought extra contest guidelines to the meeting and encouraged members to submit several entries. We must have a minimum of 200 entries to break even with the June Writing Workshop expenses.

Nancy announced that two premier writers were probable speakers for the June 2 workshop, Harvey Stanbrough, a 1999 Pulitzer Prize nominee and Anna Myers, a best-selling middle-school author, with others not yet committed.

Nancy introduced Sheryl Nelms of Azle, Texas, a well-published poet, who gave the program. Sheryl gave instructive lists for the members to use in writing poetry, as well as many useful handouts.

After the program, the meeting adjourned for refreshments furnished by Dale Ogren and Jan Carrington.

Respectfully submitted,
Carolyn Dycus, 2-26-01
