Abilene Writers Guild Meeting Minutes

January 25, 2001, 7:30 p.m., Center for Contemporary Arts

President Stewart Caffey called the meeting to order and introduced guests. The minutes are now posted on the AWG website, so reading them is waived. A copy of the minutes of both the last board meeting and the last regular meeting to insure members' access to the information.

The treasurer's report will be made available at the next meeting.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

A few "Brags and Sags" were noted by the membership.

Nancy announced this month's "Why I Didn't Write During Christmas" contest winners: First place -Ginny Greene for "Argument with a Computer." Second place was a tie awarded to Gwen Choate for "Why I Didn't Do Any Writing Over the Holidays," and Laura Thaxton, "A Letter to My Conscience." Third place was awarded to Kermit Klaerner for "Write Right."

Stewart thanked the members who worked at the Hospice Christmas tree at the Mall of Abilene for AWG's annual service project. Those manning the fundraising booth were Barbara Darnall, Ginny Greene, Nancy Robinson and Laura Thaxton.

OLD BUSINESS:

Gas has been turned off at the Writers Guild Building due to a $90 bill last month. The electricity will stay on for security purposes.

NEW BUSINESS:

Stewart announced receipt of our official determination for a tax-exempt organization from the IRS. The IRS confirmed that we have been tax exempt since 1971.

Jan Carrington announced that she would chair the spring writing contest, with the assistance of Laura Thaxton. She also asked for one additional volunteer.

Nancy announced that our building has a possible buyer and will have further information later.

PROGRAM:

Nancy introduced Dr. Donald Frazier, Chairman of the McMurry University History Department, and administrator of the McWhiney Foundation. Dr. Frazier detailed the work of the Foundation in publishing western and/or military non-fiction books. He noted many helpful tips to prospective writers of western history, including other publishing houses. Website for the McWhiney Foundation is www.mcwhiney.org.

Dick and Don Garrett and Debra Guerra furnished refreshments after the program.
