Abilene Writers Guild Meeting Minutes
Center for Contemporary Arts Building
January 24, 2002
President Stewart Caffey called the meeting to order. The minutes are now posted on the AWG web site, so reading them is waived, and the minutes are accepted by acclamation as printed. Members may examine a hard copy of the minutes, which was circulated at the meeting.
Treasurer Gail McMillan was not available to give the treasurer's report.
Guests were introduced and "Brags and Sags" were reported by the membership. Ginny Greene will have additional details regarding members' comments in the monthly newsletter. New members were introduced: James Carpenter, Joyce Davis and Martha Nawrocki.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Stewart announced that the $450 grant money the Cultural Affairs Council awarded us has been received. These funds are dedicated to our annual Spring Writers Workshop.
Also, he reminded the members that AWG has a new telephone listing for 2002 with Southwestern Bell. The telephone number will be 698-1757.
NEW BUSINESS:
We are grateful to AWG member John Busby who has donated an easel to the Guild so the planned purchase previously voted on will not be made.
A list was passed around for those volunteering to provide refreshments for the remainder of the year.
Jan Carrington, Spring Contest Chair, announced that rules of the contest are now available and also brought Panhandle Plains Writing Contest handouts for any interested members. The AWG Spring Contest will run from March 1 through March 31.
Jan said the contest results will be announced at the annual AWG Writers Workshop, June 8 at Briarstone Manor. Lila Guzman will be the main speaker.
Ginny Greene reported the National Association of Women Writers' 2002 Annual Writers Conference will be in Arlington February 16, and copies of the conference brochure were available at our meeting.
Member Barbara Rollins, Judge of County Court of Law 2 in Taylor County, presented an informative audio/video/audience participation program, a "How To" (and a "How Not to") in writing courtroom scenes.
Meeting adjourned and refreshments were served by Dale Ogren, Jo Helen Cox, Dena Hicks, Nell Sims, Dave and Becky Haigler, Carole and Ed Mahanay..
Respectfully submitted,
Carolyn Dycus
