Abilene Writers Guild Meeting Minutes
Jury Assembly Room, Taylor County Courthouse
Thursday, June 27, 2002, 7:30 P.M.
President Barbara Rollins called the meeting to order. The minutes are now posted on the AWG web site, so reading them is waived, and the minutes are accepted by acclamation as printed.
Treasurer Gail McMillan reported we have a balance of $3,750.38 in our operating account. All bills for the workshop which have been presented to Gail McMillan have been paid. AWG made $350.00 on the workshop, including the annual grant.
Jo Helen Cox has gotten information back from nonmembers who entered the Spring contest. Most of them found the contest through other guilds. Anyone who has e-mail information about other guilds is requested to get that information to Jo Helen. Jan Carrington suggested that we look for information on writing guilds wherever we go on vacation so we can notify them of our contests.
Guests were introduced and "Brags and Sags" were reported by the membership.
NEW BUSINESS
President Rollins announced that our theme for this year is "Writers, not Wannabe's." She said that most of our members have been wannabe's, but this year we will all be writers. She announced her personal writing goal, and each member or guest present announced what he or she is committed to writing this year. That information was given to Ginny Greene, who published the commitments in the July newsletter.
Nancy Robinson Masters announced that the July members-only contest theme for July is travel, with a word length of 1,000 words. First prize is $20.00. Bob Bruce is judging, and all entries are due by July 10.
Nancy Robinson Masters also announced that Kathryn Lay, a successful inspirational writer and judge of the Inspirational category for the Spring contest, will be doing a workshop on inspirational writing. Consensus was to have the workshop in October.
Gail McMillan reminded everyone that the Abilene Public Library is having their Friends of the Library event on September 28.
Nancy Robinson Masters said the July program will be presented by Sarah Mulkey, who will instruct on writing music and songs. She has a music ministry. The September program will be Robert Pace on doing historical research. He is a history professor at McMurry University. November will be our annual Thanksgiving meeting. Sam Davis, who was to speak at the Spring workshop, got his dates wrong and offered to do a makeup session. He is the Thanksgiving program.
Nancy Robinson Masters requested all members to e-mail or write her about things we like and do not like about the programs or workshops, but requested we not telephone her because she has no record of what was said. She requested comments from us after each program, and encouraged everyone to give her feedback.
Several members suggested possible program topics.
President Rollins passed out a survey concerning critique groups, and will present the results at the next meeting.
The meeting adjourned and refreshments were served and greatly enjoyed.
Respectfully submitted,
Mary W. Craig, Secretary
