Abilene Writers Guild Meeting Minutes

Center for Contemporary Arts Building

June 24, 2004

President Rollins called the meeting to order.

Visitors and new members introduced themselves. The Treasurer was absent, so no report was presented.

Members shared their brags and sags. Mary Craig announced she is moving to Montgomery, Alabama, for her new job as a law professor.

Jan Carrington discussed the July contest. The contest rules are on the website and in the newsletter. Nancy Masters reported that she has judges for almost every category.

Karen Witemeyer is the new refreshment coordinator. She asked for volunteers to provide refreshments at each meeting, and passed around a list.

John Busby introduced David Crymes, the July speaker. Dr. Crymes is a West Texas native, and an authority on George Washington. He appeared in costume, and brought an interesting program on "The Secret George Washington." When Washington was in charge of the Continental Army, he believed strongly in espionage, and did much of the sleuthing himself. Dr. Crymes said that most of the morality stories concerning Washington, like the cherry tree story, came from Parson Weems, the President of Harvard, who wrote morality tales.

The meeting adjourned to refreshments provided by Jo Cox, James Carpenter and Joyce Davis.

Respectfully submitted,

Mary Wynn Craig, Secretary
